Heritage Works Buildings Preservation Trust contracted Countryscape to produce a publication based on the ‘All Work & No Play’ project, which from 2005-2006 recorded and archived the oral histories, photographs and other memorabilia of the current and former residents and workers of Ancoats – an inner-city suburb of Manchester and formerly the hub of the city’s cotton industry. The emphasis of the project was on leisure time rather than the industrial history of the area.
The result, developed closely in collaboration with Heritage Works staff, is a richly illustrated and handsomely produced publication which uses a scrapbook concept to collate themed excerpts from the oral history interviews, alongside photographs sourced during the project and other imagery.
The publication was produced using high quality, Forest Stewardship Council certified paper stocks and vegetable oil-based inks.
Please note, the interactive book is a large file (7mb) and on slower internet connections it may take a while to download – but we think it’s worth the wait!
