Landscape Ecology

Landscape ecology is an inter-disciplinary science that aids understanding of the relationship of human activity to landscape pattern, process and change. It looks at how the geography of a landscape affects ecological processes, such as the distribution and flow of energy, materials and organisms, as well as the behaviour and function of the landscape as a whole.

Recent growth of landscape ecology owes much to the development of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology and the availability of large-extent habitat data. Such developments have helped to provide information to support landscape-scale decision making, identifying priorities to address habitat fragmentation and isolation.

Our experienced team are expert in applying the principles of landscape ecology to solve problems and develop strategies for habitat creation and ecological networks. Our close involvement with the International Association for Landscape Ecology ensures that we are informed by the latest developments across Europe and further afield.

Countryscape has developed ecological strategies for clients including The University of Reading, English Nature and Test Valley Borough Council. We have also carried out site-level ecological surveys to inform masterplans for clients including The University of Wales at Lampeter.
